Project Overview

In May 2015, I completed my honors thesis, The Role of Social Media in A Greater Good, as part of my studies at the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. This research explores the transformative potential of social media in promoting positive societal change, using case studies to analyze successful strategies and their broader implications.

Thesis Abstract

The thesis examines how social media can be utilized to advocate for a "greater good"—a concept defined by individual perspectives and societal needs. By analyzing seven social media movements, I identified key elements that drive engagement and effectiveness in campaigns aimed at fostering positive change.

Through the evaluation of these movements, the thesis highlights:

  • Methods for utilizing social media to spread awareness and inspire action.

  • The role of storytelling and visual content in engaging diverse audiences.

  • How celebrities and influencers amplify messages to reach broader demographics.

My Role and Contributions

  • Research and Analysis: Conducted comprehensive studies on social media movements, including their strategies, methods, and societal impact.

  • Case Study Development: Examined seven diverse campaigns to provide a nuanced understanding of how social media can drive positive change.

Outcomes

  • Scholarly Contribution: The thesis provides a framework for understanding the role of social media in advancing societal causes, offering actionable insights for activists, organizations, and media professionals.

  • Recognition: Published in the University of Oregon Scholars' Bank, making it accessible to a global audience interested in social media's transformative potential.

The Role of Social Media in A Greater Good showcases how digital platforms can foster meaningful change by amplifying messages, engaging communities, and inspiring action.
